Labelling Schemes That Night Shifts Actually Follow
A field-tested cable labelling approach for mining farms, designed so technicians can trace a fault without calling the day shift.
The most common labelling failure we see is not missing labels — it is inconsistent labels. Row A uses coloured tape, Row B uses printed tags, and Row C has handwritten masking tape that faded in the hot aisle.
The Scheme We Install
Every assessment report includes a labelling specification clients can hand to their electrician:

R{row}-P{position}-{type}where type is PWR or NET - Example:
R03-P12-PWRis power feed to position 12 in row 3 - Colour: Red heat-shrink on power, blue on network — applied at both ends
- Height: Labels at eye level on vertical trays, not at floor level behind miners
Why Both Ends
A technician tracing a trip starts at the PDU and walks the tray. If the label only exists at the miner end, they open the hot aisle and crawl. Dual labels cut average trace time dramatically.
Maintenance Window
Relabelling a twenty-rack row takes one technician about six hours during a planned shutdown. We schedule this on day two of assessments when the maintenance lead is available to learn the scheme.
Common Pushback
Operators worry that too many labels clutter the tray. In practice, unlabelled farms clutter faster because technicians add temporary tags after each incident. A single standard prevents label archaeology.
